This has been a hands-on term in Year 5! We have enjoyed infusing our Science topic on Forces and Simple Machines with learning new DT skills, and getting down to some challenging designing and making in the process. We have developed our measuring skills (of length and time as well as weight), and realised the importance of accuracy and control. Inspired by our work in English on the excellent book ‘There’s A Boy In The Girls’ Bathroom, by Louis Sachar, we made mechanically operated pulley systems for rescuing one of the book’s characters from quicksand, as well as parachutes of varying sizes and designs. It has been exciting to try our hands at some new tools such as power drills and saws, and so rewarding to list the new skills we have acquired, not to mention seeing our models fit for purpose!
