This term, Chestnut Class (Y2) have done lots of super learning in maths. We have focused on measurement, shape and fractions. During ‘Maths & Art Week’, we focused on measuring length whilst also creating our own versions of Mondrian’s famous primary colour paintings. The children worked so hard on their creations and should be so proud of their work!
In literacy, we’ve delved into different worlds using the ‘Talk for Writing’ text ‘How the World was Made’ as our impetus. We created worlds of chocolate; birthday worlds and even a fairy land!
We were lucky enough to take a trip up to Cotham School to spend an afternoon bouncing around on their gymnastics equipment! The children were able to put their previous gymnastics learning into action on their big, exciting equipment and they all had a fantastic time!

What a super start to 2019 we have had in Chestnut Class! In literacy, we started off with a non-fiction text all about owls, which we then innovated (using our super knowledge about hedgehogs) into a non-chronological report about our spikey friends. The following week was our first foray into the world of ‘invention’ in Talk for Writing: using a text called ‘Tell Me A Dragon’ by Jackie Morris, the children invented their own dragons and created some amazing non-chronological reports about their own dragon using the style of the texts we’d previously learnt. They even painted their dragons and they look simply stunning!
We have also been learning lots in our foundation subjects this term. In science, we conducted an experiment to find out which material is the most absorbent (so we can help our parents clean up messes in the kitchen!); in Geography Week, we have learnt about different parts of the UK and the world, including all its oceans and continents. We have even begun to develop our map skills by learning about the geography of our local area.
We have also been on a trip to the Bristol and West Progressive Synagogue in Easton. We had a fantastic time there learning all about Judaism. The class were so respectful and well behaved, they were a credit to our school and their families!

We have had a wonderful first term in Year 2!
This term we have focused on Science, and learning about Living Things and their Habitats. We took a trip to the Royal Fort Gardens to build mini-beast hotels and looked at different habitats for all the creatures living there. We even found a rabbit burrow!
In Literacy, our stories have also linked to our science topic. We have done Cat, Bramble and Heron for Talk for Writing, which we innovated after we had our trip to the Royal Fort Gardens. After that, we read The Hodgeheg by Dick King Smith. The children loved learning about Max and really enjoyed playing around with the language used in the book. For D&T week, we made puppets of Max – they are truly brilliant! The children have loved playing with their puppets and creating puppet shows.
Maths has also been successful this term: we have worked hard learning about place value and addition and subtraction. Next term: multiplication and division!
