This term the children have been learning about all things Under the Sea, and have focused on the story ‘Sharing a Shell’. They really enjoyed creating their own characters to use in the story. The children used their fantastic knowledge of sea creatures to think of characters like a Lion Fish and a Firefly Squid!

In Phonics, the children have now learnt all of the Set 2 sounds and their letter formation is really improving! Next term we will move onto Set 3 sounds and we will continue to focus on reading and writing words with 4 phonemes (e.g. s-qu-i-d) and simple sentences.

In Mathematics, the children have practically shown their ability to add and subtract numbers 0-20. They have also learnt about doubling, halving and have started to use language related to money in our role play café.

The children have been very lucky this term, having special visitors and going on trips. We helped to glaze buns to be sold on Bun Day and we went on a Forest School trip, two walking trips to the Library and a trip to the Theatre on the last day of school! They really enjoyed these exciting experiences and we would like to say ‘well done!’ to the children for showing how grown up they can be when outside the school!

This term the children have been learning ‘The Gingerbread Man’. They had great fun creating wanted posters to catch the fox. After learning the story they innovated it to ‘The Gingerbread Baby’ and changed the fox to a vampire. During our invention stage the children had a go at creating their own stories. We were very impressed with how creative the children were with these stories.

In Phonics they have been learning set 2 sounds. They have also been reading and writing words with 4 phonemes (e.g. frog) and simple sentences. In addition to this they have learnt further red words (words that cannot be sounded out). The children will continue to learn set 2 sounds next term.

In Mathematics they have been adding and subtracting with single digit numbers. Alongside this they have been working on their recognition of numbers 11-20.

We were lucky enough to go on a forest school trip at the end of this term. The children had a brilliant time exploring the forest.

This term the children have been learning the story, ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’. They had great fun building a bridge outside and acting out the story using the masks. We had some very scary trolls living under the bridge. The children innovated the story to, ‘The Three Rabbits’ and changed the troll to a shark.
In Phonics the children have now learnt all set 1 sounds. They have become very skilled at using these sounds to read and write simple words and sentences. We will begin to learn set 2 sounds next term.
In Mathematics they have become secure in finding one more and one less to 20. They have been learning 2D and 3D shape names and properties. In addition to this they have been busy creating repeating patterns and learning positional language.
We have been on a lovely trip to the Royal Fort Gardens, looking at features of our surrounding environment. The children noticed a variety of different things both natural and man made on our walk to and around the gardens.

This term Reception have learnt the story, ‘We’re going on a bear hunt’. They learnt the story so well that they innovated it to ‘We’re going on a treasure hunt’. In Phonics they have begun to learn Set 1 sounds and have started to read and write words.  In Mathematics they have been reciting, recognising and ordering numbers to 10. They have been learning how to count objects to 10 and beyond, saying one number name for each item (one-to-one correspondence) and match numeral and quantity. In addition to this they have been finding one more and one less to 10.  At the end of this term the children participated in our Key Stage 1 performance ‘A Christmas Recipe’. We were amazed by their brilliant singing and confidence on stage.

Reception Term 1 2017/18

We have had a great first term in Reception class. The children have all got to know their new school and friends very well.

This first term we have been focusing on developing the children’s awareness of sounds. They have been learning about rhyme and alliteration through songs and stories. Each child also thought of an animal that starts with the same sound as their name. In addition to this they have also explored the initial sounds in words and the oral blending and segmenting of words. This has prepared the children well to begin to learn ‘Read, Write, Inc’ set 1 sounds next term.

The children have been developing their gross and fine motor skills through ‘Write Dance’. In ‘Write Dance’ sessions children start by learning a song and actions to go with it. They are then shown examples of mark-making that they can do while listening to the song. They then listen to the song and carry out their mark-making.

In Mathematics the children have been recognising, ordering and counting numbers 0-10. They have also been matching numeral and quantity to 10. Some children have begun to go beyond 10 with these skills. In addition to this they have been introduced to Numicon and have developed some of the above skills through using it. The use of their fingers to represent numbers has also been a skill that they have developed this term.

We went on our first trip to St. Stephen’s Church for our harvest festival in the final week. We were very pleased with how well the children coped with being outside of our school environment.

Check back soon to see what else we have been up to.

Reception – 2016/2017 – Term 6

We have had a lovely final term in Reception class. In Literacy we have been learning the story ‘The Enormous Turnip’. The children had great fun acting this story out. They also innovated the story to ‘The Enormous Pepper’. During our invention week we created bog babies out of clay and natural materials. We used our imaginations to think of information about our bog babies (name, special power, where it lives, what it eats, etc.). In addition to this the children invented their own stories using their bog baby as the main character.

In Mathematics the children have been exploring how many ways they can make 5, 7 and 10 through the part-part whole method. They also learnt about place value and were introduced to tens and ones through numicon. During this term they revised and developed their knowledge on subtraction and sharing into groups of 2, 5 and 10. The children also spent some time learning about time, money and shapes.

We were very lucky to go on a second trip to Windmill Hill City Farm at the start of this term. The children made and cooked pizzas, as well as doing pond dipping and a minibeast hunt. Towards the end of the term Reception had the opportunity to show of their story telling skills to the Mayor of Bristol. They practised everyday for two weeks and did a fantastic performance of ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’.

We have had a fantastic year with Reception class. We wish them all good luck with their new adventure in Year 1 class.

Reception – 2016/2017 – Term 5

This term in Reception class we have learnt the story The Gingerbread Man. The children were asked by a local policeman to make a wanted poster to catch the mischievous fox, which we put up all around the school. The children then innovated the story to The Runaway Cupcake but this time with a mischievous Lion. After this the children need very little encouragement to invent their own stories such as The Runaway Princess and The Evil Doll.

For their phonics they are now very confident with their set 2 sounds and are now able to read and write sentences much more independently.

For Mathematics we have been looking at halving and doubling numbers, the children learnt to tell the time and we also looked at money where the children enjoyed making the role play area into a shop.

We were also very lucky to visit Pizza Express where the children became chefs for the day and made their very own pizzas. They were delicious!
