YEAR 6 TERM 2 2018/19

Year 6 had an amazing start to the term at Culmington Manor, where most of the class spent the week abseiling, orienteering and completing obstacle courses.

It was then back to work as usual. In English lessons we have read the book, ‘Wonder’ about a boy with Treacher Collins Syndrome starting a new school. We have written diary entries, character profiles, newspaper reports and poems.

In maths we have spent the whole term learning about fractions. We can now add, subtract, multiply, divide and simplify fractions.

Our topic has centered around the capital city of Santiago in Chile. We have completed our own projects about the city and learnt all about volcanoes.

YEAR 4 TERM 2 2018/19

In Willow class this term we have been focusing on a Russian folk tale – The Firebird. We have been trying to put ourselves in the shoes of several of the characters, especially Prince Ivan the main character. As he travelled from kingdom to kingdom, tricking people and trying to steal things, we have decided that we don’t think he is a hero and so have been trying to persuade him to make different choices. We have also looked at his companion Grey Wolf and whether we think he should have been helping Ivan as much as he does in the story. This has involved plenty of roleplay and even some movement to music by Stravinsky inspired by the story.

This term has also had a real focus on multiplication and learning our times tables. A new method of multiplication, column multiplication, has been introduced to the class and we have seen how we can use it to multiply much larger numbers than we can do in our heads.

We also travelled to Overcourt farm to plant trees with the Woodland Trust and learned a lot about trees and what scientists are just learning about them whilst enjoying a morning getting very muddy! In the run up to Christmas we have also made lots of cards for our winter fair using stamps and collage to be really creative. During kindness week the children made the wonderful kindness cards which are pictured below.

YEAR 3 TERM 2 2018/19

Year 3 have had a wonderful term, with so much learning going on. We have loved reading Jack and the Beanstalk and Into the Forest. We have produced so many excellent pieces of work including recounts, invented stories, play scripts and much more. We have learnt a lot from our experiences of the ‘Magic Hat’ and ‘Angel Express’. We have built on our multiplication and division skills, solving calculations, word problems and investigations surrounding different methods. Our curiosity in Topic has fuelled deeper learning, in which the children have looked at London and locational Geography in the UK. Our focus on the ‘Trinity’ in RE has been very educational with lots of opportunities to ignite the imagination. Swimming lessons have given the children so much more confidence in the water and the children should be extremely proud of themselves.

A wonderful term in Year 3, wishing everyone a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

FOREST CLASS – HAZEL LEARNERS TERM 2 2018/19

What a wonderful term we have had in Forest Class. Our topic this term was Bristol. We learnt about our local area and the features of Bristol. We learnt that Bristol is a city in England which is in Europe. We learnt the other countries of the United Kingdom as well. We thought about aerial photographs and looked at maps. We used to iPad to find our addresses on google maps. We also found the school. We drew our own maps of our journeys to school and used google maps to track some people’s journeys. We also wrote letters to our local MP asking for them to make sure our local area remains safe for us to be in. We finished our topic with a walking tour of the centre of Bristol and the river.

In English we learnt the story of ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ and created our own Where the Dragons are story. We also read ‘The Jolly Postman’ and though a lot about letter writing we have written letters from and to many of the characters from the story.

In Maths we have thought carefully about addition and subtraction. We have thought of different strategies to help us solve calculations. We have used our fingers, bead bars, pictures and number lines.

Our topic next term is Seasonal Changes, we are looking forward to learning about the weather and different animals that live locally to us and ones that live around the world.
